The Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYS) measures the reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills of individuals learning Turkish as a foreign or second language in accordance with the competency definitions outlined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Text," and has been administered internationally three times a year since 2013, simultaneously in Turkey and in all countries where Yunus Emre Institutes are located. The TYS consists of three sessions. The sections in the 1st and 2nd sessions of the TYS (reading, listening, writing) are administered as group exams; the section in the 3rd session (speaking) is administered individually for each candidate. The first session lasts a total of 105 minutes, the second session 60 minutes, and the third session 15 minutes, making the entire exam 180 minutes long.
Candidates who pass the exam are awarded a Turkish Proficiency Certificate at the B2 and C1 levels according to their scores . The Turkish Language Proficiency Certificate, which bears the ALTE Quality Mark (Q-mark), is the first internationally recognized language proficiency certificate for Turkish.
Candidates who hold the Turkish Language Proficiency Certificate are exempt from taking Turkish preparatory classes when they gain the right to study at any institution in Turkey. Additionally, foreigners who wish to teach Turkish, become counselors, or work as translators are also required to have a Turkish Proficiency Certificate. The Turkish Proficiency Certificate provides individuals with a significant advantage in job applications.
